DIY Gentle Exfoliating Face Scrub with Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI)
Ingredients:
- Phase A:
- Distilled Water: 50%
- Glycerin: 5%
- Phase B:
- Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI): 15%
- Cocamidopropyl Betaine: 10%
- Stearic Acid: 2%
- Phase C:
- Jojoba Beads (or another gentle exfoliant): 10%
- Almond Oil (or any preferred carrier oil): 5%
- Vitamin E Oil: 1%
- Essential Oil (optional for fragrance): 1%
- Phase D:
- Preservative: 1%
Equipment:
- Heat-safe containers
- Digital scale
- Immersion blender or hand mixer
- Double boiler setup
- Silicone spatula
- Clean storage containers (e.g., jars or tubes)
Instructions:
- Prepare Phase A:
- Measure the distilled water and glycerin in a heat-safe container. Mix well.
- Prepare Phase B:
- In a separate heat-safe container, measure and combine the Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI), Cocamidopropyl Betaine, and Stearic Acid.
- Heat Phase A and B:
- Using a double boiler setup, gently heat both Phase A and Phase B containers until the SCI and Stearic Acid are fully melted and both phases reach about 70°C (158°F).
- Combine Phases:
- Slowly add Phase A to Phase B while continuously stirring to ensure a smooth mixture. Using an immersion blender or hand mixer can help achieve a uniform consistency.
- Cool Down:
- Allow the mixture to cool to around 40°C (104°F), stirring occasionally to maintain a uniform texture.
- Add Phase C:
- Once the mixture has cooled, add the jojoba beads, almond oil, vitamin E oil, and essential oil (if using). Stir gently to distribute the exfoliating beads evenly.
- Add Preservative:
- Finally, add the preservative according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Mix thoroughly to ensure it is evenly distributed throughout the scrub.
- Packaging:
- Transfer the finished face scrub into clean, sterilized jars or tubes. Allow the product to fully cool before sealing the containers.
- Usage:
- To use, apply a small amount of the face scrub to damp skin. Gently massage in circular motions, avoiding the eye area. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat dry. Follow with your favorite moisturizer.
