Medium-Chain Triglycerides (MCTs), MCT Oil

MCT Oil, short for Medium-Chain Triglyceride Oil, is a lightweight, colorless, and virtually odorless oil derived primarily from coconut oil or palm kernel oil. It is composed of medium-length chains of triglycerides, typically including caprylic acid (C8), capric acid (C10), and occasionally lauric acid (C12), although pure MCT oil often excludes longer-chain fatty acids for improved absorption and performance. In skincare, MCT oil is prized for its non-comedogenic profile, fast absorption, and superior skin-conditioning properties.

Unlike long-chain fatty acids, medium-chain triglycerides are smaller in molecular size, allowing them to be absorbed more quickly into the skin without clogging pores or leaving a greasy residue. This characteristic makes MCT oil an exceptional emollient that hydrates the skin without overwhelming it. It serves as an excellent carrier oil in skincare and cosmetic formulations, enabling deeper delivery of active ingredients while simultaneously enhancing skin feel.

MCT oil is also naturally rich in antioxidants, antibacterial fatty acids, and skin-repairing lipids, making it both protective and restorative. It strengthens the skin barrier, soothes irritation, and can aid in reducing inflammation, dryness, and fine lines. Due to its stability and resistance to oxidation, MCT oil has a long shelf life and does not easily go rancid making it a highly desirable ingredient in natural and organic skincare products.
