Botanical Name: Cannabis sativa
Origin: Canada
Production: Raw, unrefined hemp oil is obtained by simply cold pressing whole hemp seeds (at temperatures below 49C or 120F), assuring optimal preservation of nutritional value and flavor.
Qualities: Hemp is a hardy and versatile plant that can be refined into a variety of commercial items including paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel, animal feed, and products for human consumption. Scientists believe that humans have cultivated hemp for its nutritional, medicinal, and industrial properties for more than ten thousand years and it is widely considered to be one of humanity’s first domesticated crops.
Hemp oil is of high nutritional value as it contains about 80% essential fatty acids (EFAs) such as linoleic acid and stearidonic acid, as well as vitamins and antioxidants. The proportions of linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid in one tablespoon (15 ml) of hemp seed oil easily meets human daily requirements for EFAs. It’s 3:1 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 perfectly matches the balance required by the human body. Hemp seed oil is thought to improve cardiovascular disorders and boost immunity as well as regulate intestinal flora.
Common Use: Hemp oil is pleasantly mild, with a nutty taste. Its exceptional nutritional density makes it an outstanding choice as a low heat cooking oil, in dips and salad dressings. Hemp oil has a composition similar to skin lipids and is, therefore, an excellent natural emollient and moisturizer that counteracts dry skin and signs of aging.
Storage: We recommend storing hemp oil in the refrigerator or freezer, in a dark, airtight container, in order to minimize oxidation and prolong the shelf life.
